Mount Baker Man and Dog Attacked by Pit Bulls

A man and his dog were attacked in Mount Baker, just outside of Seattle, by two pit bulls. They were out for a walk when the dogs attacked them. Both of the pit bulls were found and are at the Seattle Animal Shelter.

No decision has been made on whether the dogs will be euthanized. The dogs' owner, a woman, could face up to a $1,000 fine and criminal charges in connection with the attack, Jordan said.
Walston's injuries were minor, but his "Schnoodle" -- a mixed poodle and schnauzer he and his wife had nicknamed "Maggie" -- died shortly after the attack.

Animal control officers were at the scene quickly after the attack. The neighborhood is puzzled about why the police department did not respond to the 911 calls made. Many neighbors witnessed the attack and rushed to help.

Dog Bites Woman in Iowa

A woman was walking in Iowa City on Saturday morning when she was attacked by a mixed breed dog. The woman suffered a dog bite on her leg. The victim described the dog as being either a German Shepherd or a Collie mix.

According to police, a female pedestrian was walking in the 900 block of North Dodge Street when she passed an unidentified white woman who was walking two dogs around 9:20 a.m. As the pedestrian passed the woman with the dogs, one of them lunged and bit her on the thigh and punctured her skin.

The woman left the scene with her two dogs. The police are searching for her or anyone that may know who she is. They need to know if the dog is current on its rabies vaccination otherwise the victim will have to undergo treatment.

Dog Bites North Carolina Child

A family pet bit a child in Four Oaks, North Carolina and the child needed to be hospitalized for the injury. It is unknown why the dog bit the child. The director of the local Animal Services office says that the bite was "pretty bad."

No other details were immediately available about the age or condition of the child, who was attacked by a pet English bulldog, Wilkinson said. Wilkinson said the child was airlifted to a trauma hospital in the Triangle.

The dog had a current rabies vaccination and is being kept in quarantine. The incident is being investigated by the authorities.

Florida Boy Suffers Dog Bites From Pit Bull

A five-year-old boy was severly bitten by a pit bull on Tuesday and needed more than 250 stitches to repair the damage. The dog bite attack happened at the neighbor's home in Polk County.

"He has multiple bites to the head and various different punctures through the lower region of his body," Barker said. "He's also bit through his arms and his legs. He's in good condition right now. He is doing well--he's one strong little kid."

Animal control investigators aren't sure why the dog attacked, but say it is now in quarantine and will eventually be put down.

The child had a three-inch long bite on his scalp and bites to his arms, legs, and face. He is being treated at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Texas Boy Attacked by Pit Bull

A 6-year-old boy was attacked by a pit bull in Houston and the injuries were so severe that it required over 200 stitches to repair. The boy was playing with the dog at his mother's home. The dog bite attack happened on Saturday evening.

Harris County Animal Control officials went to the residence after deputies responded to the call but did not take the dog into custody because it is not a stray, Wolfe said.
The dog belong's to a male roommate of the mother's boyfriend, Wolfe said. Because the man was not charged with any crime, Wolfe declined to release the dog owner's name.
The mother's account of the incident correlated with the father's, according to sheriff's reports.

The injuries were around the boy's eyes but his eyeballs were not damaged. He is recovering at a local hospital and is in good condition.

Tips to Avoid Dog Bites

National Dog Bite Prevention Week was last week and this is a great time to review some tips to avoid being biten by a dog. Common thought is that mail carriers are most at risk, but children are much more likely to receive a dog bite than any other group.

ï‚§ Don't run past a dog. The dog's natural instinct is to chase and catch prey.
ï‚§ If a dog is threatening, don't scream. Avoid eye contact and try to remain motionless until the dog leaves, then back away slowly until the dog is out of sight.
ï‚§ Don't approach a strange dog, especially one that's tied up or confined.
ï‚§ Before petting dogs, always let a dog see and sniff you before petting.
ï‚§ If you believe a dog is about to attack, try to place something between yourself and the dog, such as a backpack or a bicycle.

Tulare County Dog on Loose After Biting Third Person

A dog in Tulare County is responsible for three dog bite incidents and remains on the loose after animal control officers could not locate him. Knuckles is part bull dog and part pit bull and has bitten three people on three different occasions. The first two times he was held for observation and his rabies vaccination was up to date. After the third incident on August 31, 2006 he could not be found.

This attack was the worst of the three, causing a series of "seriously deep puncture sounds to the back of both legs in the upper thigh area," according to records.

There was a grand jury investigation into why Knuckles is still loose. The blame was placed on not enough animal control officers working for the cities of Lindsay and Porterville. Only three people are responsible for the two cities.

Postal Carriers Being Bitten by More Dogs

Mail Carriers around the country are dealing with more and more dog attacks and bites. In the last 18 months alone 215 incidents involving aggressive dogs have been reported in the Sacramento District. 84 mail carriers have been bitten or attacked.

April is traditionally the most dangerous time of year for postal carriers, because as the weather is generally pleasant, neither too hot or too cold, owners are more apt to leave their animals outdoors for extended periods of time, Sandobal said.
"Fortunately, we have not had any major injuries this year," he said. "But it's just a matter of time before those serious injuries can happen."

Mail carriers that have been bitten are encouraged by the Postal Service to bring a civil suit against the dog's owners for their injuries. Mail carriers are alerted to potentially dangerous houses by yellow warning cards that are sorted into the mail.

Cheyenne Woman Suffers Dog Bites

A jogger in Cheyenne was attacked by a dog that was not vaccinated for rabies. She was running by a house on Victoria and a dog came at her.

The victim had this to say:

"It was showing me its teeth. It wasn't just barking. Dogs bark ... anytime you run by they bark ... this one was showing me his teeth"
"I was screaming and I tried running and I turned around and the owner was in the yard and I yelled your dog just bit me ...your dog just bit me!"

The owner of the dog has been cited with tickets and the dog is still in his custody. Animal control will need a court order to take the dog.

Parents Sue Over Dog Bite

Parents of an 8-year-old boy are suing a couple whose 3-year-old Jack Russell Terrier bit their son on the face last February, causing a permanent scar they are claiming will require extensive plastic surgery.

The civil suit was filed in Berkshire Superior Court on Tuesday against the dog owners, Kathleen and Robert Horne. Their attorney requested a jury trial for the case and they are seeking approximately $8,000 in medical expenses and corrective plastic surgery for their son.

Declining a comment on the case, their lawyer is arguing in the suit that the dog had been running loose and the Horne's "negligently failed to maintain, keep, provide, secure and license the dog at all times."

The case was also investigated by the city's animal control officer, Joseph Chague. In his report, Chague said the then-7-year-old boy and his friend were playing outside when they went over to pet Horne's dog, Jackson, on the afternoon of Feb. 22. They were sitting on the front step with the terrier when it reportedly lunged at the boy and bit his right cheek, according to Chague.
The boy's parents took him to Berkshire Medical Center, where he received multiple stitches for his injury.
Chague quarantined the animal for safety purposes for several days. Records at the city clerk's office show that the dog was unlicensed.
